The project:
Every person has a personal as well as a regional, national and international identity. Looking at the European Union and the eastern enlargement the question of establishing an european identity whilst preserving national identities is on the table. Complements and conflicts are possible when the population has the feeling that national identity is lost during the process of establishing an european one. People from old and new member countries have different fears and hopes concerning the future of the European Union.
To integrate countries beyond the mere economic sense it is necessary that we find a binding aspect and as such a european identity, a feeling of belonging together. Even national identities have once been only a mixture of regional identities which have grown together. Therefore, coexistence of local, regional and national identity is possible.
The emphasis of the project „You&Me – Youropean !dentity“ is to look at alternatives and problems of european identity in the enlarged EU. We want to contribute our share to find ways how to establish european identity by discussing questions of compatibility of national and european identity. We want to show possibilities how to find a common identity within the group of participants.
A further aspect of the project will be the connection between migration and identity. Moving places, escaping to a different country changes personal identity. An intensive exchange between national identities of old and new homeland is started. In the microcosm of the group, affiliation to an european group can be shared on an immediate basis. On the other hand, the complexity of this process will be experienced as well.
The participants will creatively express their ideas in working groups during the whole project. These are:
„Photos” The participants will take pictures which are connected to the theme, which reflect and document the group, the places we will visit and the people we will meet.
„The Canvas”: Members of this group will take care of a canvas during the project. Every day they somehow have to express their impressions and experiences of the project on the canvas. At the end of the project the so created picture will express the group’s feeling of the european idea.
„Online diary”: This group will write online reports about their daily experience with the group as well as discussions etc. The online diary will be broadcast on the homepage of bosporus to let others participate. After the project the diary it will be a platform for discussions.
“the Book”: Participants will collect different bits and pieces of their identity such as jokes, cooking recepies, songs, games etc. and make an european book out of it.
“the Sculpture”: participants will be given a box with different material of the european everyday life. With these things, they should symbolize their europe in a plastic way. After the project, the scultpure will be given away as a gift to a different european organisation. The material for the sculpture will be brought by all participants.
