Workshop: Identity: history, presence and future.
During one of the workshops about identity the topics were history, presence and future. The discussions were about how history has affected the identity and culture in the different countries, what the present situation looks like and how it might be in the future. In the history group members of each country spoke about the two events during the latest century that they thought have had the biggest impact on the culture and identity in their country.
In Hungary the territory loss after World War I and the communist regime were discussed. When it comes to France colonization and the social struggles in 1968 were mentioned. In Turkey the army-building in 1980 and minor conflicts between minorities were discussed as affecting events. Members from Poland spoke about the loss of independence back in 1795 and then the communist regime. Participants from Sweden mentioned the country’s neutralism during the World Wars which the industry gained from and was a big part in building the welfare system in their country. Another affecting event was when the Swedish Prime Minister was murdered in 1986 which was a big shock for the country. In Bulgaria the communist regime was discussed as well as 1985 when Turkish names were replaced with Bulgarian names. Among German participants the Nazi Regime was mentioned and the feeling of being German with the World War history was discussed.
When summarizing the discussion common factors that had been affecting the identity and culture in the different countries were the nation’s territory, the political system, independence, wars and struggles between minorities and/or classes. (D.I.)
The Pub in Millow: “Hör-Bar”.
The group worked in project so hard and they got tired. What would they are going to do after these tiresome debates, discussions, speeches, practices to feel relaxed? First day, we were shocked because we couldn’t find any place to buy some fresh drinks and alcohol. Thanks to Yasin and Onur, they found the “only” pub while they were walking through the Millow’s streets.
Every night, after dinners, the group gathered in the pub and have “some” drink. The prices were really low and the owner of the pub earned well. There were also a billiard table, a television and a screen which people are watching Bundesliga Matches (and that freaky TV-show that people watch wearing pajamas.)
In fact, people do not remember completely (because they are drunk?) what they have done in the bar so it is the end of the story but Hör-Bar really saved our precious nights.
